JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH: A TRIBUTE WITH REVISED INSTRUMENTATION

Rodrigo Calveyra, recorders

Juan Manuel Quintana, viola da gamba

Davide Pozzi, harpsichord

According to the Oxford Music Dictionary, “Johann Sebastian Bach’s genius combined outstanding performing musicianship with supreme creative powers in which forceful and original inventiveness, technical mastery and intellectual control are perfectly balanced”. He is one of the most important composers of all times, his music is revered for its technical skill, artistic beauty and intellectual depth. This program was created by three musicians aiming to share their love to Bach in a tribute concert, performing his hits and revising the instrumentation of some of his most emblematic pieces. Some pieces are performed with original instrumentation like BWV 1034 and the BWV 1027, written for flute, continuo and viola da gamba and obligato harpsichord. But others, like the trio sonata for organ BWV 527 and the sonata for flute and obligato harpsichord BWV 1030 are performed here with recorder, viola da gamba and continuo. The practice of changing the original instrumentation was widely employed in the XVIII century, especially with Bach’s music, which was transcribed (many times by the composer himself) for other instruments and formations.
